Poems read by Tommy Murray and music played by Irene Guckian will be broadcast on Country Roundup, Paul Carrington (11am-2.00pm, Shannonside) on Sat. 1st May, at approximate interval times 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.15pm and 1.40pm

Irene Guckian is a native of south Leitrim and has lived in Longford town for some years. She has studied Music in NUIM and trained as a Primary Teacher in Britain.  She has a reputation as a brilliant fiddle and flute player and has won All-Ireland medals on both instruments as well as gaining the title ‘Michael Coleman International Fiddler of the Year’. She has played at the Strokestown International Poetry Festival for several years, where she has teamed up with Tommy Murray for a session of popular poetry and music. Married with three children, she now lives in the Tuam area of Co. Galway where she works as a Primary School teacher.

Tommy Murray is a native of Lanesboro, but has lived in Roscommon town for many years. He worked as a Secondary School teacher and Guidance Counsellor before becoming Adult Education Officer for Co. Roscommon. He is a member of Roscommon Drama Group for over thirty years where he played many stage roles including the part of the Bull McCabe in ‘The Field’. He has a great love of narrative poetry and has enjoyed his recitals of poems that tell a story at Strokestown Festival where in combination with Irene Guckian’s fiddle they have drawn large audiences over the years.
