Strokestown Poetry Festival

Strokestown Poetry Festival invites you to join award-winning poet Jane Clarke for this inspiring and engaging online poetry writing course.

  • The six sessions will explore how to write moving and memorable poems.

  • Participants will be encouraged to develop a regular reading and writing practice.

  • There will be a “Poem of the Week” email thread where tutor & participants share excellent poems by other poets.

Each session will include:

  • Writing exercises & prompts to support participants in developing new work.

  • Workshopping poems to help participants develop their ability to assess and improve their poems with suggestions from others.

  • Input & discussion about one aspect of writing poetry: e.g. metaphor, form, music and rhythm, and also advice about making submissions, getting published, reading work in public, etc.

Tutor: Jane Clarke is the acclaimed author of two poetry collections, The River and When the Tree Falls (Bloodaxe Books 2015 & 2019), as well as an illustrated chapbook, All the Way Home, (Smith|Doorstop 2019).

In 2020 When the Tree Falls was shortlisted for the Pigott Poetry Prize, the Irish Times Poetry Now Award  and the Farmgate Café National Poetry Award as well as being longlisted for the Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje Prize. Four of her poems feature in Staying Human (Bloodaxe Books 2020) and one of the poem from When the Tree Falls was selected for The Forward Book of Poetry 2021. 

Jane grew up on a farm in Co. Roscommon and now lives in Glenmalure, Co. Wicklow, where she combines writing with her work as a creative writing tutor and mentor. She holds a BA in English and Philosophy from Trinity College, Dublin, and an MPhil in Writing from the University of South Wales, and has a background in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
